MY QUALIFICATIONS.  You could say that to a large extent my Public Relations training started when I was a young lawyer back in 1976 in Illinois.  There really are many similarities in terms of developing cogent and effective ways to sell your idea.  For the lawyer it might mean convincing a jury that just because the police arrived as his client was stabbing the guy who ended up dead doesn't really make him a murderer.  For the public relations consultant it might mean helping the alleged murderer from being treated too harshly in the media.  After all there are always at least two sides to any story.  Sensitivity to the client and the situation coupled with superb abilities at persuasive argument are essential skills shared by both professions.  By 1984 I had moved to southern California and began working as a talk show host on KFOX 93.5 FM.  Soon I found myself interviewing some major celebrities such as Mel Gibson, Barry Levinson and A. Martinez.  I also quickly began consulting with small public companies each with a substantial need for both continuous promotion and abundant public relations savvy.  For roughly 25 years I performed these tasks for a great many corporations.

But by 2005 my life took a major and ultimately joyful turn when my then 9 year old daughter announced that she was going to be an actress.  A whole bunch of little girls decide that they are going to be actresses, but I know of only one who made the announcement this way.  "Daddy, when I grow up I am going to go to NYU.  When I graduate from NYU I am going to star on Broadway for two years and then I am going to go to Harvard Law.  On that day just six years ago her acting resume was blank.  Today it covers most of the backside of her head shot and she has three IMDB credits with more on the way.  She has never backed down.  

Soon I found myself meeting and increasingly working with a wide variety of entertainment industry people.  Frankly despite my earlier "celebrity" radio interviews I found most of the folks in the entertainment world to be very pleasant and generally fun to be around.  I also immediately saw how very much the fine people of the entertainment world need very competant public relations and publicity work always.  For the super stars it is simple, hire the best you can find and keep him or her and a very large monthly retainer.  But what of the up and coming actor or director or screen writer with tons of potential and some income.  How does that person get the PR assistence he or she needs and still eat regularly?  

I quickly found myself putting my decades of experience finding solutions to these and other related issues.  Ultimately by early 2011  I terminated all of my previous corporate work to dedicate myself to the new group of entertainers in need of superb public relations counsel at an affordable cost.   Please take a look at just some of the ways I can make your star shine ever more brightly.

THE PRESS RELEASE  It is a fundamental tool of publicity. It is fast, cheap and essential.  But it also requires skill in draftsmanship and knowledge in distribution.  Consider this fairly common set of facts.  Actress Betty lands a role as a "featured" extra in a low budget feature film.  Being "featured" means she has a character name, let's say Brittany. One of the stars, we will call her Nancy, was once nominated for an academy award.  Betty's friend tells her she needs to let the local media know of this great step forward in her acting career.  She writes a letter something like this:
"Dear Editor:  My name is Betty and I am an actress.  I recently got a role in a movie.  Nancy is also in this movie.  I thought maybe my friends and neighbors would like to know about this."
Another friend happens to be a PR professional and drafts a press release that reads like this:
PRESS RELEASE - IMMEDIATE
Local actress Betty cast in new feature film.
CITY, STATE   Local actress BETTY has been cast along with Academy Award nominee Nancy in a new feature film "Film Title" being produced independant film company Films R' Us.  .............
Seriously now, given just these two short examples, if you were a news editor which one would you read and maybe actually print?  
Next knowing when, where and to whom to deliver your press release is vital to achieving maximum effect.  Moreover this is now the internet age.  Press releases that are properly released get on the net and your name recognition can steadily even dramatically grow.  Name recognition is another term for stardom.

MANAGING THE MEDIA Another crucial area in which the a competant public relations consultant can be worth his or her weight in gold is in media management.  You can not totally control the media, it is simply too large and mostly committed to gathering and disseminating true stories of interest to their readers, viewers or listenners.  But to a significant extent it is possible to manage media.  Doing this involves many facets.

     *  Knowing who you are dealing with.  Oprah, for example, has a different agenda and style than say David Letterman.  An appearance with either can be a strong PR positive but only if you adapt to best fit in with their particular style.  If for some reason that proves to be impossible then knowing that is critical so the a devasting national TV appearance can be avoided all together.

     *   Setting ground rules in advance of an interview is also a way to protect your interests.  However, many major media folks will typically not agree with this approach.  Still by simply requesting it upfront will often reveal exactly what a prospective inerviewer is looking for and knowling that can avoid nasty surprizes and unhappy results.

     *  Learning how to effectively spin any rough spots that may arise can reduce, prevent or even turn the negative to a positive.  

     *  Building allies within the media.  One sure way to strenthen your positive media power is to build friends within the business.  All people are far less likely to burn a friend than an unknown or enemy.  

Tending to these tasks is one of the most critical duties of an effective public relations manager or publicist.  The client rarely has either the time or experience to tend to this tasks yet doing so is deeply important to achieving the desired effect.
